Battle Lines

You are in a battle.  Like it or not, aware of it or not, it’s real and it’s happening all around you.  And I’m not referring to the political skirmishes that litter the airwaves, or even the military combat that is happening around the globe.

No, the battle I’m referring to is the one between God (and all that are His) and His enemy (and all that are aligned with him.  The word “Satan” simply means adversary- and that is what the enemy is and does- he opposes and seeks to “steal, kill and destroy”- to quote Jesus.

But all too often, we forget that this battle is even happening.  C.S. Lewis said it this way in The Screwtape Letters (and he refers to demons or angelic beings that are aligned with Satan as devils):

“There are two equal and opposite errors into which our race can fall about the devils. One is to disbelieve in their existence. The other is to believe, and to feel an excessive and unhealthy interest in them. They themselves are equally pleased by both errors and hail a materialist or a magician with the same delight.”

Which means that most of us would be helped by moving in one of two directions: One is to take the existence of our enemy more seriously- and fight him in the ways that Scripture instructs us.  The other is to be less consumed with our enemy and more obsessed with our King.

How about you?  What direction do you need to move?
